A city portal for the Garden Realm

With the sophisticated inn “Zum Eichenkranz”, Prince Franz had a gatehouse built that would have honoured any metropolis. Seen from the outside, it is the entrance to the city – from the inside a gateway to the garden kingdom.

The three-winged half-timbered building, which is visible from afar, was built between 1785 and 1787 – again according to plans by the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff. The “Eichenkranz” was conceived as a social center of the city and inn for discerning travelers. Artists, scholars, nobles – all those who cared about themselves descended here. The sophisticated rooms were named after major European cities.

At the inn “Zum Eichenkranz” Prince Franz’s democratically enlightened openness towards his subjects also ended. The monarch conveyed to his construction manager Georg Christoph Ezekiel “that this inn, more intended for strangers, will not become a lagoon house for locals”.
Today, the inn is open to all people as part of a guided tour.

In 2004, the Society of Friends of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom took over the “Eichenkranz” from the city of Wörlitz with a leasehold agreement and had it gradually renovated. Today, concerts and conferences take place here.
