In Dessau’s Georgengarten, it is fascinating to see how cleverly an existing alluvial forest, the so-called Beckerbruch, was integrated into an English landscape park. In this way, exquisite garden design and the wild nature of the Elbe floodplains merge into a homogeneous whole. The heart of the complex is the classicist Georgium Palace, which rises like a silent sentinel from the green expanses and invites visitors to explore the art-historical treasures within.<\/p>\n

History<\/div>

Connection between art and nature<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t

Around 1780, an ambitious project began to blossom on the sandy fields and meadows northwest of the royal seat of Dessau: the Georgium. It was Prince Johann Georg von Anhalt-Dessau, the younger brother of the visionary Prince Franz, who cherished and realized the dream of this landscape park. The designs for most of the buildings were created by Friedrich Willhelm von Erdmannsdorff. From 1780\/81, he also created the palace in the style of an English country house – of classicist simplicity and elegance. Anhalt Picture Gallery<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t

A veritable treasure trove of art is presented here. Works by Dutch masters, German late Gothic and Renaissance artists, Dutch Mannerists, Dutch and Flemish Baroque, German Classicism as well as an extensive graphic collection, Erdmannsdorff’s estate of drawings and sheets from the Chalcographic Society take you through the centuries. Georgengarten and Beckerbruch<\/h4>\t\t\t\t\t\t

With its gently curving paths, the Georgengarten at the castle merges seamlessly into the extensive Beckerbruch. A 97-hectare landscape stretches all the way to the Elbe, with architectural gems and sculptural works of art at every turn.
