Schloss and Palace Park

Orange Tree

An impressive baroque ensemble

Schloss Oranienbaum and Palace Park characterize the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz with baroque splendor, Dutch character and charming reminiscences of distant China.

The outstanding complex is older than the classicist Wörlitz complexes and was built at the end of the 17th century.
The client was Henriette Catharina of Orange-Nassau (1637-1708), who came from Holland and married prince Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau (1627-1693). For Anhalt, which was impoverished after the Thirty Years’ War, this connection was a great gain. While the princely couple had first stayed at the Brandenburg court and in Berlin, they finally moved to Anhalt in 1667 and designated nischwitz as the site of a future castle. The architect Cornelis Ryckwaert, who comes from the princess’s homeland, was commissioned with the construction. Construction work began in 1683, and by 1673 the village had been named after the princess’s ancestral home: Oranienbaum.

Initially, the castle was conceived only as a summer residence, but after the death of the prince it became henriette Catharina’s permanent widow’s residence. Following the ideal of baroque order based on the Dutch model, a 28-hectare castle garden and an entire city were also created. The castle in the style of a French three-wing complex housed magnificently furnished interiors with leather wallpaper, faiences and paintings. Today, the tile cellar (summer dining room), the leather wallpaper hall and the mirror crystal hall bear witness to the former splendour.

Prince Franz gave the ensemble its own character by having the baroque island garden converted into an Anglo-Chinese garden – the only surviving one of its kind in Germany. Its architectural highlights are the elaborately restored Chinese Tea House and a towering pagoda. The elongated orangery of the castle, designed by Carlo Ignazio Pozzi, was also built in 1812. Since then, Mediterranean citrus fruits have thrived there, enriching the castle park in summer.

The restoration of the palace complex is a huge project for decades. But a visit to the castle is already a must for visitors. The leather wallpaper hall and the northern pavilion shine in new splendour. In 2014, a “tobacco collegium” was set up in this part of the castle, which is used as a kitchen building with its original black kitchen. It is a reminder that in the 1690s, Henriette Catharina granted a farmer the privilege of growing tobacco, thus initiating a long tradition of cigar production.
